It’s Not All Burnout: Why It’s Time to Stop Using “Burnout” as an Umbrella Term |

There are many terms used to describe the negative effects of working in the helping professions – yet the term burnout has emerged as a favourite, particularly in healthcare. Burnout is often erroneously applied as a “catch-all” term to describe any negative work-related experience. As a result, it is almost impossible to offer evidence-based, best-practice recommendations to our staff when the source of their distress is misunderstood. For example, the most effective strategies for mitigating burnout may have no effect on mitigating experiences of secondary traumatic stress.
This session will explore concepts and terms that are used in workplace wellness education, explore the consequences of using clear terminology, and provide an overview of the latest research on burnout. |
