Description: This program is meant to both situate pediatric and adolescent gender dysphoria within cultural and medical contexts. In the first half of the program, the presentation aims to discuss the definition, nomenclature, and very brief history of gender dysphoria, as well as basic aspects of medical management. This will include induction of testosterone- and estrogen- medicated puberty and pubertal blockade. The second half of the program is less didactic and meant to situate gender dysphoria within current cultural and media-related contexts, with a focus of how individual positionality impacts perceptions of medically-necessary care.
Dr R Claire Roden is an assistant professor of Pediatrics and the Director of Adolescent Gender and Sexual Health Services at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. She completed her undergraduate education at Haverford College, where she majored in biology, with a minor in French and a concentration in Africana Studies. She graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA in 2013, followed by her pediatric residency at Cooper University Hospital outside Philadelphia in 2016, and her adolescent medicine fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH in 2019. Her academic and clinical interests include contraceptive care, sexually transmitted infection and HIV prevention, gender dysphoria in teenagers, eating disorders, and the sexual and reproductive health needs of adolescents with disability. In her spare time, she loves gardening, hiking, knitting, and spending time with her husband Matt, daughter Rosa, and family dog Bobo.
