Back to School Safety Refresher

Back-to-school season comes with plenty of checklists. Consider this one more thing to add to yours: a quick safety refresher for the whole family with these three tips.
Tip #1: Who are your Five Safe People?
One of the simplest things a family can do this school year: help your child identify five trusted adults they can go to with any problem or worry. These can be parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches, or any adult who has your child’s best interest at heart. If the first person can’t help, your child has four more to try. Post the list somewhere visible, or save the numbers in your child’s phone. It’s a small step that gives kids a clear plan when something feels wrong.

Tip #2: Talk About Online Safety
Online safety works best when it’s an ongoing conversation, not a one-time list of rules. Talk with your child about what they share, who they interact with, and what to do if something online makes them uncomfortable. Most importantly, make sure they know they can come to you when something goes wrong without automatically losing access to their device. Keeping that door open makes it easier for kids to ask for help.

Tip #3: Teach Body Safety Basics
These two questions stay the same whether the person is someone your family knows or someone you don’t:How does this person make me feel? What is this person asking me to do? If someone makes a child feel uncomfortable, worried, confused, or like something just isn’t right, they should check in with a trusted adult. The same goes if someone asks them to do something that breaks a family safety rule. Stop and check with one of your trusted adults first. |
